SoMe Index, week 33

Welcome to week 33!

It’s a wrap for the Rio Olympic games and we’re seeing impressive numbers across the board, even more so for countries that saw success in the games. We’ve got direct correlation between winning publisher engagement and that respective country’s medal count, so let’s start from the top, shall we?

Starting off with France, sports site L’EQUIPE takes gold with a smashing 4,7 million total engagement thanks to an impressive French medal tally of 10 gold, 18 silver and 14 bronze (including two golds, two silvers and one bronze from judo, a personal favorite). This reminds us of week 27 when L’EQUIPE beat the rankings by 4,3 million engagement due to France placing second in the Euro 2016 games. Daily newspaper 20 Minutes comes in second this week at 2,2 million engagement and broadcaster BFMTV wraps up the top three with 1,3 million engagement.

Moving on to Sweden, we’ve got leading tabloid by circulation Expressen placing first with an impressive 2,3 million engagement, again due to success in the games. Sweden’s medal tally for the 2016 games equals two gold, six silver and three bronze medals. Rival tabloid Aftonbladet comes in a bit behind this week with 1,5 million engagement, an impressive figure still by any standards, and viral site Newsner places third with 940,000.

In a rare occurrence, we’re actually seeing Norway ahead of Finland in terms of top engagement but during the Olympic games, winning has everything to do with it. Broadcaster TV 2 wins big by a little over 1 million engagement, twice as much as during any ordinary week. Norway’s medal tally? Four bronze. Public broadcaster NRK comes in second at 607,000 engagement and the country’s second-largest tabloid newspaper Dagbladet.no wraps up the top three at 544,000.

Finland ended up with its lowest medal count in any Olympic games in history by only claiming one bronze medal – a far cry from the 37 medals brought home from the 1924 Paris games. Fortunately, there still is a decent Olympic boost in engagement during the past two weeks. Tabloid newspaper Ilta-Sanomat wins the last Olympic week by 946,000 engagement, with rival tabloid Iltalehti hot on their heels with 920,000 engagement. Public broadcaster Yleisradio wraps up our social media Olympics with 851,000 engagement.

Let’s take a look at some of the top posts from last week:

This L’EQUIPE native pic of men’s super heavyweight boxing gold medalist Tony Yoka has earned more than 181,000 reactions, shares and comments.

This Sportbladet post celebrating Swedish women’s national football team making it to the final earned more than 100,500 reactions, comments and shares. In the end, Sweden won silver.

Iltalehti turned Finland’s sole bronze medal into a social success with this post, earning more than 30,000 engagement.

A bit surprisingly, Norway’s top post this week is not about sports but something else entirely. This VG story about former drug addict Aleksander finding his dream job through a Facebook post earned more than 27,000 reactions, shares and comments.

That’s all for this time – see you here next week!
